La Barceloneta is a district of Barcelona located on the Mediterranean Sea in the Ciutat Vella (old town) district, with currently 15,503 inhabitants on an area of 131.4 hectares.

location

Barceloneta is a peninsula in the southeast of Barcelona and, due to its location directly on the sea, has around 1,100 meters of beach, which is divided into different sections: Platja de la Barceloneta , Platja de Sant Sebastià and Platja de Sant Miguel . Every beach in Barcelona has the ISO 14001 certificate (environmental management) and therefore very good water quality. To the west the district is bounded by the Port Vell , to the east it is bordered by the Port Olímpic (both parts of the port of Barcelona ). In the north, the Parc de la Ciutadella and Estació de França of the RENFE railway company and the metro station of the same name on line 4 are adjacent. At the southern tip of the peninsula, the Barcelona harbor cable car , which is now used for tourism, runs over Port Vell to Montjuic .

The long, narrow streets that criss-cross Barceloneta in a north-south direction are characteristic of Barceloneta. The center of the district is the Plaça de la Font with the market hall, which was renovated in 2007.

founding

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Catalonia fell temporarily to the Habsburg Charles VI. In order to protect Barcelona from further raids, King Felipe wanted to build a fortress in the La Ribera district in 1714 , where the Parc de la Ciutadella stands today (Ciutadella catal. For citadel , fortress). The residents of the neighborhood were relocated to barracks in what is now Barceloneta. In 1749 these barracks were replaced by stone houses. Mainly fishermen and factory workers lived in Barceloneta, which became the fishing district of Barcelona. There were some of the best fish restaurants there. These “chiringuitos” were large, simply furnished and just as simply built and stood until 1991.

Barceloneta after the Olympics

Barceloneta Beach

The 1992 Summer Olympics brought many changes for Barceloneta. The houses and streets have been renovated. The chiringuitos were torn down to make way for the new beach promenade. In this context, the sculpture L'estel ferit by Rebecca Horn was created.

The whole thing meant that Barceloneta was also developed for tourism. Originally, Barceloneta was a very poor neighborhood with a high crime rate, which was just avoided by tourists. As a result of the Olympic Games and the economic boom in Spain, unemployment fell. As a result of the renovation work, the district looks much brighter today.

Although Barceloneta still offers much simpler living conditions than other districts of Barcelona, it has experienced a significant boom. The rental prices have risen extremely.
