geography

Location of the port areas
(north = picture on the right)

The port area of Barcelona is about three kilometers south of the historic city center and is a pure port and industrial area on the Mediterranean . To the south it is bounded by the mouth of the Riu Llobregat . The almost 20 km² large port area is divided into three main areas. In the far north is the Marina Port Vell for private yachts, to which the Port Franc connects to the south , which is mainly used by commercial passenger shipping , ferries , tour and cruise ships . At the port entrance, the imposing port administration building and the striking steel frame construction of the Moll Barcelona tower dominate . There is also a shipyard area in the east basin. Spatially clearly separated are the piers and docks for cargo handling with their outlying areas and their own port basins in the far south. The port's industrial area of almost 23 km² is adjacent to this to the west.

The two smaller, further north located ports of Barcelona, the Port Olímpic and the one at the mouth of the Besòs serve exclusively for recreational shipping and tourist purposes. They are meaningless for commercial large-scale shipping.

history

Already in the Neolithic and the Copper Age, coastal shipping was practiced in the area. As the evaluations of archaeological finds show, a considerable amount of seafood and sea fish was consumed, meaning that fishing was carried out at least near the coast. The sea level at that time was about five to seven meters lower than it is today and the coastline was two to three kilometers further east.

Coin finds suggest a small Greek colony and extensive trading activities. Around 200 BC The area was dominated by the Carthaginians , who also sailed at sea and probably used the estuaries of the Riu Llobregat and Besòs as landing sites.

Early fortified structures emerged under the Romans in the first century BC (~ 70 BC). The name Barcino appears for the first time under Emperor Augustus . The export of, for example, Garum , Catalan rock and wine to Rome has been handed down . Around 420 the area came under Visigothic influence, the Roman era ended between 460 and 470 AD.

The Llobregat estuary at Montjuïc was mentioned again in writing in 1378 as a secure harbor . However, this port was soon silted up by the load of the river and from 1438 a new port was built further north.

Pen-and-ink drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries show the continuous expansion of the port facilities.

In the 18th century, the port of Barcelona developed into a hub for the global cotton trade .

Since 1931, the Barcelona harbor cable car , which should actually have been in operation for the 1929 World Exhibition, has been running from the port to the 173 m high Montjuïc.
