Albert Rohan (born May 9, 1936 in Melk , Lower Austria ; † June 4, 2019 ) was an Austrian diplomat , columnist and consultant for commercial enterprises.

Life

Albert Rohan came from a during the French Revolution partly fled to Austria French noble family Rohan .

After studying and doing a doctorate in law at the University of Vienna and a master’s degree from the College of Europe , he began his career in 1963 at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs . His diplomatic activities took him to Belgrade, London and, during Kurt Waldheim's tenure as UN Secretary General, to New York, where he was entrusted with the management of the Secretary General's cabinet in 1977.

After holding several top positions in the Austrian diplomatic service (including ambassadors in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay), Rohan became Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry in 1996 . In 2004 he was rapporteur for the EU's International Turkey Commission . Together with Martti Ahtisaari , he was appointed as a special envoy by the UN in 2005 to mediate the conflict over the future status of the Serbian province of Kosovo, which is under UN administration .

Ambassador Albert Rohan was President of the Austrian-American Society and Vice President of the Austrian Society for European Politics and a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations .
