Albert Schneider Memorial

Albert Schneider (born November 30, 1833 in Trautenstein , † April 29, 1910 in Bad Harzburg ) was the secret building officer and railway director of the ducal-Braunschweig region .

Life

Albert Schneider was born in Trautenstein in 1833 as the son of the pastor . From 1873 to 1886 he was railway director in Blankenburg (Harz) , until 1892 board member of the Halberstadt-Blankenburg railway (HBE) and from 1893 chairman of the supervisory board. As the person responsible for the construction of the Harz Railway between Blankenburg and Elbingerode (Harz) , he enforced the use of a standard gauge instead of a narrow gauge railway in order to avoid the otherwise necessary reloading work in Blankenburg. In collaboration with the builder of the Swiss Rigibahn , he designed a hybrid of gear and adhesion operation, which was used here for the first time in the world and which enabled gradients of up to 6.1% to be overcome.

Albert Schneider died in Bad Harzburg in 1910, where he is commemorated with Albert-Schneider-Strasse . In Blankenburg and Trautenstein there is also an Albert-Schneider-Straße that was named after him.

A memorial was erected near the goat's head . There are also memorial plaques on his birthplace in Trautenstein and at the train station in Blankenburg, where he lived for a long time.
