The Braunschweiger Burschenschaft Alemannia is a fraternity founded in 1873 and is a founding member of the General German Burschenschaft . It is a compulsory , academic corporation at the Technical University of Braunschweig and has its roots in the " Progress Association Allemannia " founded in 1850 , which already referred to fraternity goals, and is thus the connection with the oldest fraternity tradition in Braunschweig.

General

The Braunschweig fraternity Alemannia has the motto “ Honor, freedom, fatherland ! ". It requires its members to hit an approved scale and has an optional second scale as a boys' party.

Color

The active boys wear the black-gold-red ribbon with black velvet hat and the boy colors to their full color. The fuxen ribbon is black and gold and is otherwise only worn by the fux major across the lady's ribbon as a sign of his office.

After joining the old manor , the old man is awarded the black, gold and blue ribbon in the tradition of the progressive association Allemannia . From now on, the old man's ribbon is worn together with the boy’s ribbon as a sign of the old man of the Alemannia fraternity.

history

Establishment as a progress association Allemannia

In the middle of the 19th century, in addition to other student connections, the progress connection Allemannia was established in Braunschweig . The progress movement stands in the sense of the fraternity movement . Establishing a fraternity was still forbidden at the time.

It was founded on May 1st, 1850 and chose the colors black-gold-blue based on the uniform of the black crowd . It pursued goals similar to those formulated at the Wartburg Festival on October 18, 1817. After a short time, however, the Allemannia had to temporarily adjourn due to a lack of young talent and an official ban.

Foundation of the Alemannia fraternity

In 1871, Braunschweig fraternity students founded a fencing club. On November 10, 1873 this fencing club founded the Alemannia fraternity . The colors black-gold-red with a black cap were chosen . The sloganPer aspera ad astra ” was added to the general fraternity motto “Honor, Freedom, Fatherland” . Its aim was to promote the morality and diligence of the students and to enforce the moral principle. On October 23, 1875, the tradition of the progress connection Allemannia was ceremoniously handed over by the four remaining founders to the Alemannia fraternity . Since then, the colors of the progressive connection have, with interruptions, been the old man's colors, i. that is, they are worn as the second band by all old men .

In 1877 Alemannia chaired the student body at the inauguration of the new university building in Braunschweig's Pockelsstrasse. Due to the decline in matriculations due to tough admission regulations, the Alemannia fraternity had to be relocated to Hanover in 1881 , which promised new admissions. Nevertheless, she kept in close contact with the Braunschweig community and university life. The lack of improvement in the youth situation meant that Alemannia had to cease activities in the summer semester of 1882.

On October 23, 1893, the Alemannia fraternity in Braunschweig was renewed and in the same year accepted into the Niederwald Deputy Convent , which had been founded in 1889 as an amalgamation of fraternities at technical universities .

After the dissolution of the Niederwald Deputy Convent in Eisenach in 1896 due to differences of opinion, the Rüdesheim Deputy Convent was founded in 1900 on the condition that the maturity principle was followed . In the following years, the Alemannia was to be expanded into a modern connection. Fraternity evenings were held regularly, the drinking commentary was abolished, and events with women were introduced to educate the friars in society.

Beginning of the 20th century

On November 10, 1913, the connection house on Rebenring (formerly Rebenstrasse 15) was inaugurated for the 40th foundation festival. In the First World War , most of the federal brothers were under arms. Nevertheless, a covenant life was maintained with federal brothers and war returnees resident in Braunschweig.

On January 4, 1919, the TH was opened for the first post-war semester, and the Federal Brothers, who were shaped by their experiences at the front, had to be integrated. Based on these experiences, an extraordinary boys' day took place in January 1919 , on which the fraternities of the universities and technical colleges united to form the German fraternity (DB) .

National Socialism

In the summer semester of 1929, a group of Nazi students held 3 of the 20 seats in the AStA for the first time . Reich Minister Carl Severing (SPD) received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University with the substantial participation of Federal Brother Carl Mühlenpfordt . As a result, the Alemannia decided that its federal brothers should be non-party in order to avoid political conflicts. Under a state government with a National Socialist minister, the Braunschweig student body was to be drawn into the waters of the National Socialist German Student Union (NSDStB). The rector and some professors, including Carl Mühlenpfordt, opposed this. As a result, he was ousted from office by means of a dirt campaign, also in connection with the shooting of Axel Schaffeld .

On October 18, 1935, the German fraternity was dissolved, and it became mandatory for active members to belong to the SS or SA . The newly introduced red uniform hats of the Braunschweig fraternities were intended to express their unity against pressure from the NSDStB.

In the winter semester of 1935/36 the Alemannia fraternity was renamed Kameradschaft Alemannia, later Axel Schaffeld . From now on it was led by an NSDStB comradeship leader. This caused disputes, so that the comradeship was dissolved towards the end of the winter semester and the house was rented to the National Socialist Motor Vehicle Corps (NSKK) . Even so, the former members continued to meet.

After the Second World War

In 1945 the technical university resumed study operations. The house was confiscated and looted by the Allies. As early as 1945, some students and lecturers came together in the General Student Union (Coreper) , which was fraternized. On December 11, 1948, primarily old men from Alemannia joined forces to form the Coreper Supporters' Association. In 1959 the colors and the founding flag of the Alemannia fraternity were handed over to Coreper from 1873, and in February 1951 it was renamed the Alemannia fraternity.

Initially, they met in a house on Konstantin-Uhde-Straße, which was rebuilt in-house, where today's university library is now. Which later, after compensation payments, was transferred to the original liaison house on the Rebenring.

In the meantime, the German Burschenschaft had also been re-established in 1950. In the years 1951–1954 there was heated discussion within the federal government about the scale issue , which ended in the reintroduction of the controversial determination scale.

In 1956 the friendship relationship with the Stuttgart fraternity Ghibellinia was entered. Which has enjoyed the lively exchange between the two fraternities for many years. People visit each other at foundation festivals and pubs and maintain a friendly, fraternal relationship. A highlight of the year is the hut weekend that we celebrate together, on the Traifelberg , in the Hermann-Kinderle hut of Ghibellinia.

In 1958 the founding date of the Alemannia fraternity was set on May 1, 1850, the founding date of the progress link, and confirmed by the DB. Then in 1960 the 110th foundation festival was celebrated on the renovated house, combined with the handover of a new federal flag to replace the one that was lost in the Third Reich . In 1966/67, Alemannia chaired the German fraternity . Due to a lack of members, the Alemannia was postponed in the summer semester of 1977 with the consent of the old manor. It resumed normal operations on October 1, 1978, despite the small number of members.

21st century

In 2013 he left the German fraternity. As a result, they were part of the founding of the association with the Burschenschaftliche Zukunft initiative. In October 2016, together with some other fraternities, the General German Burschenschaft in Jena, an der Grünen Tanne , proclaimed where Alemannia is a founding member.
