Friedrich Jarchow (born June 3, 1926 in Bochum ; † October 22, 2011 ) was a German mechanical engineer. He was a professor at the chair for machine elements, gears and motor vehicles (LMGK) at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB).

Friedrich Jarchow attended school in his native Bochum until he graduated from high school in 1946. He completed his studies in the field of general mechanical engineering from 1947 to 1952 at what was then the Technical University of Braunschweig. During his studies he became a member of the Braunschweiger Burschenschaft Alemannia in the winter semester 1949/50 . After completing his studies, he worked from 1952 to 1960 at the Technical University of Munich as a research assistant at the chair for general design theory and machine elements. He obtained his doctorate in 1960 under Gustav Niemann on worm gears . In the same year his industrial career began at Rheinstahl Hüttenwerke AG in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where he headed all construction departments of the plants from 1960 to 1963 - from 1963 as chief engineer. In 1964 he was granted power of attorney and in 1967 he became director. In 1970 Jarchow was appointed full professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum. From 1974 to 1975 he was dean of the faculty for mechanical engineering and from 1976 to 1978 chairman of the faculty conference for mechanical engineering. After his retirement, his student Wolfgang Predki took over the management of the chair for machine elements , gears and motor vehicles (LMGK), where Jarchow worked until the end. The focus of his research work in the field of drive technology was among others:

  • power-split gear transmission
  • continuously acting motor vehicle powershift transmission
  • Worm gear: load capacity, efficiency and self-locking

Prof. Jarchow has passed on the results of his work to experts in over 80 publications. He has also supervised more than 60 doctoral theses. Today his students work in many important drive technology companies and as professors at universities and technical colleges.
