history

Founding years

The Germania fraternity was founded on August 31, 1861 by seven students from the Collegium Carolinum , today's Technical University of Braunschweig, making it the first and oldest fraternity in Braunschweig . The members wore the colors black-red-gold and black hats.

The early years up to around 1864 were characterized by administrative and personnel problems. After overcoming such initial difficulties, the federal government devoted itself to the goal of unifying the fraternities at the technical universities. So in 1869 the first cartel with the fraternities Cheruskia Dresden and Alemannia Stuttgart came into being .

From the German Empire to the First World War

The German victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 brought Germany an economic boom in the early days . This led to a more relaxed outlook on life among the students. When the chastity principle was then abandoned in favor of the moral principle , some members resigned. After their negotiations with the old rulers to take over Aktivitas Germaniae failed, they founded the Braunschweig fraternity of Alemannia in 1873 .

In 1876 the Germania fraternity was dissolved and re-established as Corps Germano-Brunsviga. The corps was only able to last two years. The advocates of this movement saw the goal of the fraternity in the establishment of a German nation-state and thus their purpose in the establishment of the 2nd German Reich in 1871 fulfilled. A counter-movement under Alsleben and Hasenbalg then founded the Cheruskia combat fraternity, in which they continued the fraternity idea of Germania. In the summer of 1877, the old gentlemen of Germania asked the Cheruskia fraternity to reopen the Germania fraternity with the old colors of black, red and gold. As a sign of this new beginning, the hat color was changed from black to red.

In the following years, the unification of the technical fraternities was pushed further: In 1889 the Niederwald-Deputierten-Conventes was founded as an association of technical fraternities and in 1900 it was replaced by the Rüdesheimer-DC, which was renamed the Rüdesheimer Association of German Fraternities in 1905 . From the Rüdesheimer-DC the Rheinische Ring grew as a cartel within the German fraternity .

During the First World War , federal life almost came to a standstill. With 27 friars , the majority of Aktivitas went enthusiastically to war, from which 25 never returned.

In the Weimar Republic

At the end of the First World War, the November Revolution took place in Braunschweig, as in the entire German Empire . Under the leadership of August Merges , Duke Ernst August abdicated. The goal of the revolution was originally the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Braunschweig . As a result, many "Teutons" moved to Hanover and formed the leadership of the "Braunschweig Student Company" there.

After the revolution was suppressed by the march of the Maercker Freikorps in April 1919, the Social Democrat Heinrich Jasper became Prime Minister of the Free State of Braunschweig .

To counter the economic crisis caused by the steadily rising inflation , an economic commission was founded. There was now only one cash register into which each member paid and all the money was immediately converted into items of stable value. Old men then contributed additional money, which overcame the inflationary crisis.

During the time of National Socialism

Once on the Burschentag 1933, the leadership principle had been taken over for the German fraternity, the state-prescribed transformation began the fraternity Germania for militarized in the following months residential fellowship .

The gradual harmonization of the German fraternity led to its self-dissolution on October 18, 1935. With that, the fraternity Germania ceased to exist according to the law. The tradition of Germania was then continued under the name of Wohnkameradschaft " Walter Flex ", whose federal life was increasingly restricted by the beginning of the Second World War .

During the bombing of October 15, 1944 , the Germanenhaus was hit by an Allied aerial bomb and it was only thanks to the stable ceiling over the pub and convent hall that it did not burn down to the foundation walls. After the end of the Second World War, the Germanenhaus was in ruins and its members were scattered across Germany, either captured or fallen.

Post-war history until today

After the end of the war, the Germanenhaus, albeit badly damaged, served as a meeting point for all members and as temporary emergency accommodation. A larger group then began the makeshift restoration of the house.

The Carolo Wilhelmina University of Technology resumed operations in the 1945/46 winter semester. In secret meetings at the Germanenhaus it was decided to give the old covenant a shape again. Then in May 1946 the " Braunschweiger Studentenbund " was brought into being. Under the British occupation forces , which were very critical of the student association, it was initially not possible to re-establish the Germania fraternity.

After further years in which the condition of the house was continuously improved and the "Braunschweiger Studentenbund" was officially recognized, Germania was finally reopened in 1949.

She had been a member of the German Burschenschaft since 1950 , which she chaired in 1963/64 and 1995/96. On December 8, 2012, the Braunschweig fraternity, Germania, decided to leave the Association of German Fraternity immediately. In autumn 2016 Germania was one of the founding fraternities of the newly founded "Allgemeine Deutsche Burschenschaft".

The Germanenhaus

House of the Braunschweig fraternity Germania

Germania has its own liaison house : the Germanenhaus. In 1901 the fraternity decided to create its own home. After initially renting a house in 1903, the decision was made to build a house of their own in 1910. The old men of their Aktivitas had this built on Rebenring (formerly Rebenstrasse 21) in 1913/14 and consecrated it on 16/17. May 1914 a.

In 1944 it was hit by an Allied bomb and it was only thanks to the stable ceiling above the Kneip and Conventsaal that it did not burn down to the ground. In the post-war period, the roof and the top floor were initially repaired as a makeshift and expanded further in the following years. In the nineties it was completely renovated again.

Cartel and friendship relationships

The Braunschweig fraternity Germania was one of the founding fraternities of the Rheinischer Ring cartel in 1920 and has been a member there since it was founded.

In Eisenach at the Burschenschaftsdenkmal on October 18, 2013 the Alliance of Four between the KB! Teutonia , MB! Arminia-Rhenania , B! Hilaritas and the Braunschweig fraternity Germania. In January 2018 it was decided by the Four Alliance Convention that the Four Alliance should be dissolved. The founding goals were considered to have been achieved after the ADB was founded.
