Albert Wolff (born Abraham Wolff on December 31, 1825 in Cologne ; died on December 22, 1891 in Paris ) was a German - French journalist , writer and playwright .

Life

Abraham Wolff was born in Cologne as the son of Salomon Wolff and his wife Helena, née Ochse. After finishing school, he completed a commercial apprenticeship in Paris. This was followed by studies in Bonn before he settled entirely in Paris in 1857. Here he initially worked as a secretary for Alexandre Dumas (father) . From 1859 he was editor of the magazine Le Charivari under the pseudonym Charles Brissac . He then moved to Figaro , where he became a leading art critic in 1868. He later rose to become the newspaper's editor-in-chief.

His discussions at the Paris Salon had a major impact on the success of contemporary artists. Wolff was an avowed supporter of academic painting, with Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier being one of his preferred artists. The Impressionism accompanied Wolff critical and occasionally he spoke highly of individual works. He later published his precise observations about his adopted home Paris in several books. He also wrote some novels and plays.
