Albert Moritz Philipp Freiherr von Oppenheim (born November 13, 1834 in Cologne , † June 23, 1912 in Hamburg ) was a co-owner of the Sal. Oppenheim bank and an important art collector.

Life

He was the son of the banker Simon Oppenheim and Henriette Obermayer. In contrast to his father, Albert, like his older brother Eduard , converted from the Jewish to the Christian faith in 1858 . This enabled him to marry into an important Cologne family. He was married to Paula Engels (1837-1919). Among other things, he was the father of Max von Oppenheim and Emil von Oppenheim . In 1867 the Oppenheim family was ennobled.

Between 1880 and 1904, alongside Eduard von Oppenheim, he was a partner and owner of the family's banking house. He also held various supervisory board mandates. He was chairman of the supervisory board of the Westphalian Union and Phoenix AG for mining and smelting operations . His fortune for 1912 is estimated at 25 million marks. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Reichsbank .

His active time as a banker was marked by considerable problems for the private banks. They were in competition with the growing big banks. In 1884 the Prussian stock corporation law was changed at the expense of the private banks. Many of the supervisory board mandates were lost to the big banks. Despite all the problems, the brothers Albert and Eduard managed to secure the bank's independence. At the end of his life, however, the bank ran into difficulties due to bad investments.

Because the generation change from the fathers' generation took a long time, the brothers had plenty of time to take care of other things before taking over the business. Albert von Oppenheim developed into an art connoisseur and was the owner of one of the most important private painting collections in Germany of his time. He had inherited the basis of this and expanded it further. He collected Dutch and Flemish masters. Works by Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens also belonged to his property. He also collected Rhenish stoneware and ivory work. In 1865 he had his palace at Glockengasse 3 in Cologne expanded to accommodate his collection. In 1884 he acquired Ramersdorf Castle . He was also involved in founding the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne.

Albert von Oppenheim died in 1912 at the age of 77. He and his wife are buried in the family grave at the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (HWG, between lit. K + L).
