Rescuing Jews in Hungary

As an employee of the Portuguese ambassador to Hungary, Sampaio Garrido, he initially helped to issue protective passports for Jewish families. After Garrido was dismissed, he became an interim ambassador or business agent for the embassy.

Prime Minister Salazar allowed 500 passports to be issued, mainly to people who were somehow connected to Portugal, Brazil or the colonies. In truth there were around 800 protection passes for individuals and families; He saved the lives of around 400 families and 1,000 to 1,200 people, but in the end it was just a pretext: everyone who inquired at the Portuguese embassy received a passport. In the end, Salazar resignedly agreed to this policy.

Many of the Jews were housed in houses and apartments bought by the embassy, so that Germany and Hungary had no access to the Jews because of the extraterritoriality . On October 29, 1944, he was able to report to Lisbon that the Hungarian government and the German ambassador had agreed to Portugal's policy and that they would leave the embassy alone in future.

Teixeira Branquinho involved the Portuguese Red Cross , which got its own small section in the embassy and diligently helped protect the people.
