Alberto Carlos Sainz (born December 13, 1937 ) is a retired Argentine football player . He played for the Argentinos Juniors and CA River Plate , among others, and took part in the 1962 World Cup with the Argentine national soccer team.

Career

Club career

Alberto Sainz began playing football in 1959 with the Argentinos Juniors , a first division club from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires that was rather unsuccessful at the time . For the club Alberto Sainz completed 72 league games in the Primera División in three years from 1959 to 1961 , but the defender was denied a goal. The performances shown in the jerseys made other clubs aware of the talented defender. So it came that he moved to Argentina's noble club CA River Plate in the winter of 1962 , where he was part of one of the relatively unsuccessful River Plate teams in the club history of the record champions of Argentina. During the time of Alberto Sainz at the Estadio Monumental, not a single title was won. The greatest success of that time was reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1966 , where the team around players like goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo , midfield strategist Luis Cubilla and attacker Juan Carlos Sarnari only failed in the replay with 2: 4 after extra time against Uruguayan representative Peñarol Montevideo . Alberto Sainz was used by Rivers coach Renato Cesarini in all three finals and was an important part of the team throughout the rest of the tournament. Despite his role as a regular in the River Plate team, Alberto Sainz left the club in 1967 at the age of thirty and after 151 league games with one goal. He went to San Lorenzo in Mar del Plata , where he let his active career as a football player end in the following two years and came to fourteen appearances in the league.

National team

Between 1961 and 1966, Alberto Sainz made six international matches for the Argentine national football team . By coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo he was nominated for the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in neighboring Chile . During the tournament, Lorenzo used the River Plate defender in the first and last group game. Both in the 1-0 win against World Cup newcomers Bulgaria and in the goalless draw against Hungary , Alberto Sainz played his part in the Argentinian team's game without conceding a goal. However , he missed the only defeat, the 1: 3 against England . The performances shown were not enough for the Argentine team to qualify for the quarter-finals, which also marked the end of Alberto Sainz's World Cup activities. Despite the fact that he was active in the national team until 1966, Lorenzo did not consider him for the 1966 World Cup in England .
