Alberto Susat

Alberto Susat (born April 20, 1898 in Riva on Lake Garda , South Tyrol ; † May 28, 1977 in Salzburg ) was an Italian painter and restorer .

life and work

Susat came from an old Austrian family of Italian nationality from Riva on Lake Garda. His father was an Austrian court official. He attended school in his hometown and from 1914 studied in Rovereto at the teacher training seminar .

After Italy entered , he served in the II. Tyrolean Kaiserjäger Regiment from 1915 to 1918 and was a railway official in Trento after the war .

In September 1924 he moved to Salzburg , where he found his second home. He first worked as a painter, but through studying old masters and their work techniques he came to the profession of restorer . Numerous study trips to research this specialty raised the rank of restorer, who from 1930 onwards was almost exclusively dedicated to restoration. Since 1925 he was a member of the Salzburg Art Association and the Special Association of Austrian Artists . With the salvage of the Faistau frescoes in the Small Festival Hall in 1938 and their reassembly after the Second World War , the artist earned lasting merit. Numerous exhibitions, especially watercolors at home and abroad. In 1956 he was awarded the title of professor , in 1964 the ring of the city of Salzburg and in 1968 the coat of arms medal of the state capital in silver.
