The August-Bebel-Platz , Upper Sorbian Augusta Bebelowe namesto , is an inner-city square in Bautzen District Northeast ring . Taucherstraße and Martin-Hoop-Straße on the eastern corner , Taucher- and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße on the southern corner , August-Bebel-Straße on the western corner and Dr.-Ernst-Mucke-Straße on the northern corner flow into the square .

shape

The square has the shape of a roughly 160 m long and 80 m wide rectangle oriented northeast-southwest. In the middle of the rectangle is the Protestant Maria and Martha Church , built between 1888 and 1891 , which dominates the street scene. On the outside, August-Bebel-Platz is surrounded on three sides by villa-like apartment buildings. On the northeast side is the central bus station in Bautzen with several stops for regional and long-distance buses.

history

Until the second half of the 19th century, the area outside the city fortifications of today's square was undeveloped. Today's August-Bebel-Platz was created in the course of the expansion of the Bautzner Ostvorstadt, which began around 1870, initially as Albertplatz , named after the Saxon King Albert, who had ruled since 1873 . The square bore this name until the end of World War II , after which it was named after the founder of the German social democracy , August Bebel .

Development

In addition to the Maria-und-Martha-Kirche, there are eight other cultural monuments on August-Bebel-Platz , including six rental villas (No. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 11) and the villa of the District Church Office (No. 10) and a tenement house (No. 14). All buildings were erected between 1870 and 1915.
