Friedrich-Engels-Platz, jewelry square with a sculptural group of figures "Seated old couple" Friedrich-Engels-Platz
(map)
After 1910 (Schmuckplatz); 1974 (group of figures) Urban planning and artistic importance. Schmuckplatz with reference to the local and regional court as well as to the adjacent buildings on the adjacent streets. Design first recorded in 1913 on the measuring table sheet. Most of the original pathways have been preserved, bordered in the northeast by a partially gapped, opposite avenue of silver linden (Tilia tomentosa - old trees) and in the southwest by an opposite avenue of winter linden (Tilia cordata - renewed, probably originally also silver linden). At the square-like extensions of the two crossroads, groups of 4 pyramid oaks (Quercus robur 'Fastigiata') each, five of what used to be eight yew trees (Taxus baccata) have been preserved inside the oval of the path. Ornamental plantings from summer flowers. Disruptive element: playground. The important horticultural artist Max Bertram worked out a design for the Schmuckplatz between 1903 and 1912; he was evidently not entrusted with the execution; the extent to which his design was implemented must be checked. Seating group by Horst Weisse (1919–1993), created in 1974, cement, a male and a female figure (almost life-size) sit on a reclining plinth on an abstract bench facing each other.

Originally built in 1901/1902; 1950s reconstruction essentially Former institute for teacher training and observatory, today grammar school, later district office, of architectural and local significance, three-wing complex with emphasis on the middle section, corner cuboid, mansard floor. Upper Lusatian school regulations from 1770 called for seminars for the training of teachers, due to lack of funds and war circumstances by rural estates only realized at the beginning of the 19th century. First a few private seminars (especially for the training of Sorbian teachers), then in 1817 a foundation was established by the Upper Lusatian nobility to set up a rural seminar for the training of German and Sorbian teachers. Lessons first in the house at Mönchsgasse 7. 1851 Establishment of a separate Catholic teachers' seminar in house An der Petrikirche 4 (Catholic teacher training institute). Due to the growing number of Catholic seminarians, a new building was necessary at the end of the 19th century, which was moved into in 1903 at Flinzstraße at the corner of Stiftsstraße (today Friedrich-List-Straße). This building was badly damaged by the war in 1945, the building was rebuilt in 1950, including characteristic design features such as rusticated plinth, corner blocks, risalits, and window frames in the redesign. Renovation in 2005 adds a new level of time to the historic school building with respect for the traditional substance. 09250453

Signed 1903 in the vestibule (villa); 1903 (garden fence); 2002 (reconstruction of the fence) Representative Art Nouveau facade, of architectural and artistic importance. Villa of the factory owner Rudolf Weigang, co-owner of the lithographic institute "Wilhelm Adolf Weigang und Comp." Founded in 1838, patron of the arts and benefactor, architect: Prof. Alvin Anger (1859–1924), former gardener's house recorded at Wallstrasse 3a.

About the garden: The landscaped villa garden was probably created directly in connection with the construction of the villa in 1903. The formerly richly furnished garden originally also comprised the properties Wallstrasse 3 and 3a as well as Taucherstrasse 14 and 14a. The inventory that is preserved today is limited to the grounds of the Weigangvilla. Towards Weigangstrasse and Wallstrasse, the garden is enclosed by an elaborately crafted wrought-iron grille fence with sandstone posts. The garden, which is criss-crossed by landscaped paths, is equipped with a raised seating area with a sandstone wall, a grotto and an impressive population of old trees. The garden was restored in 2002.

  3. ↑ Figure group “Seated old couple” on Friedrich-Engels-Platz :
In 1974 the figure group “Seated old couple” was created for the Friedrich-Engels-Platz in Bautzen, which is located at the regional court. The artificial stone sculpture is one of the early works of the sculptor Horst Weisse (1919–1993), who only became artistically active at an advanced age . Horst Weisse, who was born on December 3, 1919 in Eppendorf / Erzgebirge, worked a large part of his working life in his profession as a trained wood carver and toy manufacturer, in which he passed the master craftsman's examination in 1954 and then went into business for himself. In the early 1960s, Weisse, who had lived his life in his home in the Ore Mountains up to that point, moved to Bautzen for family reasons. The change of location was also accompanied by a new professional start. In Bautzen, Weißen gave up his job, which had given him little pleasure for a long time due to the serial work method, and turned to the fine arts. He quickly found a more abstract formal language - a tendency that became more and more prominent in the course of his artistic work.
The sculpture "Sitzendes Altes Paar" (Sitting Old Couple), which sparked heated discussions in Bautzen in 1976 about their placement and removal - an article in the Sächsische Zeitung from that year speaks of "stumbling blocks" - also tends to relate to the couple's physiognomy and the Exaggeration of the limbs clearly to the abstraction of the human figure. The sculpture presented on a reclining plinth shows two larger-than-life figures, a male and a female, sitting next to each other on an abstract bench. The bodies are facing each other so that the knees of the figures almost touch. Her hands, which, like her feet, appear expressive due to their sheer size, are folded in her lap. In a frontal view, the group in the lower area appears closed despite the many stone openings, while the upper half of the sculpture is broken up due to the two upper bodies, which are designed in blocks and separated from each other by empty air space. In this way, the composition of the couple creates a peculiar tension that moves between harmony and isolation.
The public controversy about white plastic only came to an end with a report by the sculptor and member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR, Wieland Förster . The human being, in particular the aging human being, was often the subject of the art of white. In the years 1982/83, for example, his marble sculpture "Reading Old" was one of the most widely noticed and discussed works of the IX. Art exhibition of the GDR. In the course of his work, the narrative moment in Weisses works fades into the background in favor of the representation of general human experience. Artistically his figures are close to the expressive blockiness of Ernst Barlach. Above all, however, the later works are reminiscent of the abstract, spacious body of Henry Moore, whom Weisse named Barlach himself as an inspiration. The sculpture "Sitzendes Altes Paar" (Seated Old Couple) shows itself through the use of formal exaggerations and a tendency towards abstraction as a reflection of international artistic trends of the previous century. It is one of the few works of this style in the public space of the city of Bautzen of artistic importance.

Building description: The staff building is on the left at the entrance. All other houses are grouped around the large barracks yard. Right next to each other are the three company houses, accommodations for teams. Staff building I and another company building form a closed wing. From farm building I, which is closest to the barracks yard, stone arches lead to the other two houses. In farm building I, which is already noticeable from the outside with its clock tower, there is the team dining room, a lounge for non-commissioned officers, kitchen rooms with four boilers, three roasting ovens and multi-burner gas stoves as well as modern kitchen appliances. There are also washrooms for the kitchen staff, a reading and play room for the staff and three companies, as well as the steam heating system with which the adjacent buildings are supplied with heat. The business rooms are on the first floor of the building. There are also lounges and washrooms for the cleaning ladies. In the corridors there are niches for storing rifles. There is also a storage room with cupboards for married NCOs who live in the city and change here. The second floor contains apartments, classrooms, workshops for shoemakers, tailors and saddlers as well as an equipment room for the news series. Washrooms for the teams have been found on the ground floor. The corridors are covered with light-colored tiles. The rooms have parquet floors. The shoe and clothing room and a gun cleaning room are located on the floor. Little information is available about the three company buildings along today's Thomas-Müntzer-Straße (team houses II, III, IV). The three-story houses were purpose-built. The crew quarters were in front of a hallway in the middle of the house. These had large windows, were heated by steam heating and were even provided with hot water connections. The barracks complex of the infantry barracks in Kantstrasse also included a parade hall and a riding hall, vehicle halls and stables, a small-caliber shed and small-caliber shooting ranges. On the farm building II and the company houses there were tower platforms that went beyond the roofs and were used to accommodate anti-aircraft guns. The platforms can still be seen today on the former farm building II.

Spacious, angular complex with lush trees and numerous ornate tombs from the 17th to 19th centuries. Century. The cemetery was consecrated in 1523 and expanded to the north in 1598. The wall was enclosed in 1630. 1775–77 and 1899 enlargements to the north and east. Hexagonal ossuary with a flat tent roof, 1558, after 1945 urn burial hall, gravestones added to the outer walls. Gravestone for Gottfried Ewald († 1662), right on the north side, roughly life-size relief representation of a boy. Gravestone for Johann Gottfr. Henrici and his wife Christiana Sophia geb. Pannach, on the north-west side, probably in the middle of the 18th century, with two inclined cartouches adorned with tendrils, on the right an antique female figure (corresponding left figure is missing). Gravestone for Karl Mirus († 1707) and his wife († 1704), at the ossuary, on a massive profiled base, two cartouches surrounded by tendrils, below are a crying and a writing putto.
Particularly noteworthy are the two baroque rows of crypts from the 18th century, the northern, somewhat older, forms a fairly uniform building structure with intricately crafted lattices (restored from 1992–94), the newer on the east side, also with artistic lattices, but different in the southern part designed crypt houses. Tietzesche crypt, end of the 18th century, square building, the tent roof crowned by urns, the facade strictly classically structured: in the center portal with Tuscan columns and simple gable, in the fields framed by pilasters niches with decorative urns. Several classicist tombstones inside. Franck's crypt from 1745, elaborate two-story building on a square floor plan with a curved tent roof, the corners filleted, a cornice between the floors. Portals on all four sides with simply profiled granite walls and a striking keystone, in the arched door fields reliefs with emblems of death, palm leaves and banners, the monograms JGF and AMR on the powerful bars.
