Wilhelm Theodor von Rotberg (born February 9, 1718 in Karlsruhe , † October 30, 1795 in Gotha ) was President of the Chamber and Privy Councilor in the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg .

Life

Wilhelm Theodor von Rotberg was the son of the Oberhofmarschall of the margraviate of Baden-Durlach , Leopold Melchior von Rotberg and his wife Salomea von Günzer.

Already under Duke Friedrich III. (Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg) he worked at the court in Gotha. As Hofmeister , Rotberg was responsible for the education of the Hereditary Prince Ernst , in whose government he later served as a privy councilor. In the years from 1770 he was entrusted with several high offices and functions, which gave him a dominant political position in the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg. He was President of the Chamber of Gotha and Privy Councilor, which at the time meant a seat on the Privy Council in Gotha, which as a government cabinet was occupied by five to six exclusively aristocratic personalities. Von Rotberg was later entrusted with the office of chief court master at the Gotha court.

Rotberg was also an entrepreneur and founded the Gotha porcelain factory in 1757 . After Duke Ernst II appointed him president of the ducal chamber, he retired from managing the company in 1782.

The Almanach de Gotha developed from the almanac nécessaire published by Rotberg in 1763 .
