Detailed memorial texts

  1. Description of the Schmochtitz manor (Silke Epple, December 2009):
The manor came into the possession of the Saxon house marshal Peter August von Schönberg (1732–1791) in 1763. He had a richly furnished garden in the Rococo style laid out. In 1801 his daughter Auguste Charlotte took over. Countess Lynar, later Countess von Kielmannsegge (1777–1863), kept the property and kept it until 1821. It was she who rebuilt the property, which was heavily damaged in connection with the Battle of Bautzen in 1813. After several changes of ownership, the Zwickau industrialist Wilhelm Otto Thost († 1924) acquired the estate in 1892 and redesigned part of the garden in the landscape style. He had the outbuildings that he found demolished and the ones that exist today built. After Otto Thost's death, the property was sold again and has been owned by the Catholic Church since 1925. From 1927 to 1945 it was used as a seminary. The estate was occupied by the SS between 1942 and 1945. In 1945 the manor burned down.
The former manor is now divided into two main areas by the street: a north and a south park area. In addition, there is a forest north of the park with the remains of a sun temple. In the far north there is a former kitchen garden enclosed by quarry stone walls. Adjacent to the south are the remains of the rococo garden. The Sphinx, a sandstone garden sculpture (around 1820), and a round sandstone fountain with a dolphin sculpture are also located here. In addition, a temple-like staffage building, the so-called Elysium, is placed in the immediate vicinity. Again to the south of this is the manor with the newly built mansion, the outbuildings and remises. The former nursery is located to the east of the manor. The landscaped grounds of the 19th century are adjacent to the northwest of the building. This is richly furnished, including a memorial in the form of a granite bench for Otto Thost (around 1925). In the southern area of the park there are remains of the rococo garden, some of which have been landscaped. Here is the coconut palm, a lavishly designed garden sculpture from 1769. In addition, there are various memorial stones and remains of garden sculptures. Dehio - Handbook of German Art Monuments / Saxony Volume 1:
The castle built around 1770 burned down in 1945. 1975 Reconstruction of the chapel at the south end, furnished by Friedrich Press. 1989–92 Reconstruction of the castle by the architects Just and Vogt, referring to the historical basic form, but modern design. Broad building with hipped roof and dormer windows, strong central projection with two-armed, four-flight staircase, including a wall niche with access to the basement. Two-storey entrance hall with arcade columns and stucco ceilings. A large, modern fountain in front of the stairs. The adjoining two-storey farm building with a half-hip roof, built in the Swiss style in 1893, two of which were restored in 1992, gutted inside and redistributed. A curved archway leads to the so-called baptistery, around 1770. Round tower with bell roof, the front adapted to the side wing walls. The room in the basement has a dome and a basin in the cone. At the rear, an external staircase leads to the upper floor. To the north is the orangery, now a residential building, end of the 18th century, simple plastered building with a crooked hipped roof, high arched windows on the south side. In the extensive English park there is a sandstone figure of a sphinx, around 1730. Sandstone memorial for Elector Friedrich August III. von Sachsen, a palm tree stands on a rock-shaped base with an inscription board, in the middle of the trunk a medallion with a rider, marked 1769. In the northern part of the park ruins of a sun temple, end of the 18th century.
