Totality of Royal Saxon Triangulation ("European degree measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony"); Station 49 salt forest | (at the exit towards Bautzen) (map) |
Marked 1865 | Triangulation stone, 2nd order station; significant testimony to the geodesy of the 19th century, significant in terms of surveying history.
The historic surveying pillar is clearly visible not far from a fork in the road on the eastern edge of the village in the field, next to individual bushes. For years the cover plate lay next to the column and was partially buried in the ground. In August 2011, it was lifted back onto the pillar and the area around the foundation remnants of the former high signal was cleared. In the inscription “Station / SALZENFORST / der / ... ... / Triangulirung / 1865” “Kön. Sächs. ”Made illegible. "TP" has been chiseled in on the east side. The views to other points are no longer given due to the development and new forest areas. There was no height bolt attached to the pillar. The views to neighboring points are restricted by the forest and new buildings on the road. In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony, in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Christian August Nagel , according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as "Nagelsche columns". This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance. |

Monument to Handrij Zejler | Handrij Zejler Street (map) |
Around 1950 | Plaques and memorial plaque with a head in the shape of a flower medallion, of local history. Memorial to the Sorbian poet and editor Handrij Zejler (1804–1872), who was born in Bautzen-Salzenforst. Three-part structure, consisting of a central concrete stele and flanking granite panels. The portrait medallion of Zejler, cut flat in red stone and framed by a wreath of six stone petals, is attached to the upright, rectangular, gray concrete stele. Lateral granite panels are set slightly indented in front of the stele. These close straight to the middle, but bulge outwards in a drop shape. A text in Sorbian appears on the left, Zejler's name and life data are engraved on the right.
After studying theology in Leipzig from 1825 to 1829, Zejler initially worked as an assistant preacher in Klix near Bautzen, and later from 1835 until his death in 1872 as a pastor in Lohsa. As a student, he and a fellow student published the handwritten student newspaper Sorbische Zeitung (1826–1828), in later years (from 1842 to 1848) Zejler took over the editing of the first regular Sorbian newspaper at the request of JA Smolers and was from 1844 to 1849 himself editor of an evangelical monthly newspaper. In addition to his journalistic activities, Zejler also devoted himself to folklore and linguistic studies, which resulted in the publication of a contemporary Upper Sorbian grammar and collaboration on an Upper Sorbian-German dictionary. Above all, however, Zejler is known as a poet of popular and romantic poetry and is considered the founder and most important representative of modern Sorbian art literature among the Lusatian Sorbs. Because of the memory of the Sorbian poet Handrij Zejler associated with it, the monument is of personal and regional historical importance. |
