The Schiller High School in Bautzen is a high school with a mathematical and scientific character. It is named after the writer, philosopher and historian Friedrich Schiller .

history

On January 12, 1871, the Saxon Ministry of Culture allowed the Bautzen city administration to set up a secondary school of the second order. This was followed on April 24th by the establishment of a secondary school on Wendischer Graben. In 1884 this school was given the rank of Realschule 1st order. Due to the growing interest in the training offered there, the district school inspector L. August Wangemann campaigned for the construction of a new secondary school building. On May 30, 1900, the foundation stone was finally laid on a specially acquired site south of the old town .

The house, built in neo-Gothic style, was inaugurated on September 26, 1901. In 1922, the first German school observatory was re-established on the roof of the building .

The school had its own name since 1938; the name at that time was " Wilhelm-von-Polenz School" . After the Second World War , as part of the school reform, the grammar school, Catholic and rural high school were merged to form the state high school, and in 1947 the United High School was formed from the Wilhelm von Polenz School and the State High School. After a staged survey of the student body, the school committee decided in April 1948 on the new name "United Oberschule Friedrich Schiller" , as the name after a nobleman had met resistance.

In 1950, after a teacher and a student were expelled from school, there were protests among teachers and students. The State Security responded with arrests and the like. a. of the teacher Bruno Sulla , who later died in custody under unexplained circumstances. A memorial plaque in the school foyer has been commemorating Sulla since 2006.

After the reunification , the extended secondary school "Friedrich Schiller" received the rank of grammar school.

The two school buildings are located in the square between Schilleranlagen, Seminarstraße, Tzschirnerstraße and Neusalzaer Straße. The three-story main building A with its representative portal and gable looks north to the German-Sorbian People's Theater opposite . The four-storey annex B (the former Pestalozzi School , designed by J. Arthur Bohlig in 1913/14 ) faces south-west. Its eastern wing houses an outbuilding of the Philipp-Melanchthon-Gymnasium . Between the two buildings there is the so-called “quiet courtyard” with green areas, a small amphitheater and bicycle racks, as well as the two gyms. Behind building B is the school yard for the younger students. All buildings and the courtyards have been renovated in recent years.

organ

In the school auditorium there is an organ made by the Bautzen company Eule .

successes

In 2007, 7 high school graduates achieved an average of 1.0. That was the highest number at a Saxon grammar school this year, but this is not surprising in view of the very large number of students and thus also high school graduates for Saxony. In recent years, high school students have won prizes at Jugend forscht (first prizes in the state competition, participation in the national competition) and National Geographic Knowledge (first prize in the national competition). The school has been awarded the title “School with an Idea” several times.

Working groups

There are several working groups (AG) at the school . In addition to the youth choir and singing group, there are working groups Abseil8 (climbing), floristry, school zoo, several theater groups (“Schiller's robber daughters and sons”) and others. a.

School celebrations

The Schillers Superparty , the traditional school festival, takes place every year. The program is designed every year with the participation of teachers and students from the eleventh grade. The high school graduation ball takes place on the day after the Abitur certificates are issued, which usually takes place in the German-Sorbian People's Theater. For several years there has been an annual medieval festival in the courtyard of the grammar school.

School partnerships

Schiller-Gymnasium has four school partnerships: with Gymnasium No. 69 in Barnaul (Russia), Escola Secundária da Manga in Beira (Mozambique), Northside High School in Warner Robins , Georgia ( USA ) and the Lyceum in Sobótka ( Poland) ).

Schiller brand

In the Schiller-Gymnasium Bautzen, the school organizations Superparty, SchAZ (Schillers Allgemeine Zeitung) and the newly founded Schiller-Kleid merged in 2009/10 and now form the Schiller brand. Mutual support, funding and advice are thus guaranteed.
