Alexei Nikolayevich Bach
Alexei Nikolayevich Bach ( Russian Алексей Николаевич Бах ; born March 5 . Jul / 17th March 1857 greg. In Zolotonosha , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire , now Ukraine ; † 13. May 1946 in Moscow ) was a Soviet biochemist and revolutionary. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and senior president of the Supreme Soviet .
life and work
Bach grew up in Boryspil and attended high school in Kiev . From 1875 he studied natural sciences at the University of Kiev . After his involvement in student unrest, he was arrested and exiled in 1878. After various revolutionary endeavors, he emigrated to France in 1885 and later to Switzerland.
In Paris, Bach worked in Paul Schützenberger's laboratory , and in 1891 a research trip to the United States followed. In 1917 he returned to Russia, where he founded the Central Chemical Laboratory. In 1928 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Bach's scientific focus was on the investigation of the assimilation of carbonic acid and the mechanism of oxidation via peroxides . The Engler-Bach peroxide theory is named after him.
His grave is in the Novodevichy Cemetery (Parcel 4, Row 24, No. 7) in Moscow.
