Albrecht Woeste (born October 30, 1935 in Düsseldorf ) is a German entrepreneur and sports official.

Life

Driven by the development of the manufacturing process for seamless steel tubes by the Mannesmann brothers , Düsseldorf became a center of the tube industry at the end of the 19th century. Woeste's grandfather Richard manufactured the necessary connecting pieces, fittings and flanges and founded Richard Woeste & Co in Düsseldorf in 1893 for this purpose . His son Reinhold, father of Albrecht Woeste, successfully continued the company and also married Ellen Lüps, a granddaughter of Fritz Henkel , the founder of the Henkel Group . After graduating from Humboldt-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf in 1956, he studied industrial engineering at the Technical University of Berlin , graduating in 1961. Subsequently, Albrecht Woeste joined his parents' company in 1963 and took over management in 1969. From 1990 to 2009 he was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Shareholders' Committee of Henkel. He was also President of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1991 to 1999 and has been its Honorary President since then.

After ordering his house from his own company and from Henkel, Albrecht Woeste wanted to bring his extensive business experience to bear in football and especially in horse racing. The latter is in the worst crisis in its history after a failed structural reform, sharply reduced betting sales and barely any media presence. In this situation, Woeste was elected on March 11, 2009 to succeed Jochen Borchert as President of the Directorate for Thoroughbred Breeding and Races (DVR). Against the resistance of numerous opponents, he initiated the German Racing project , in which fans and active horse racing fans should contribute financially in order to take over a majority of the leading betting broker Racebets.com . The intention is to redirect internet bets that have so far flowed to bookmakers in tax havens and thus bypassed racing to the totalizator of the racing clubs. A total of 397 investors took part in this project, which is unique in German sport, with a total of over 4 million euros.

On August 25, 2009, Albrecht Woeste was elected to the supervisory board of his home club Fortuna Düsseldorf . In addition, he is the deputy chairman of the board of the Industrie-Club Düsseldorf , and was chairman of the alumni association of his former school for many years.

Woeste has been married to Renate, née Röpke, since 1963. He has four sons, from whom Gerrit took over responsibility in his father's company in 2000.
