The Alcocks spruce ( Picea alcoquiana ) is a plant species in the genus Spruce ( Picea ) within the pine family (Pinaceae).
description
The Alcocks spruce is an evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to about 35 meters. The needles are 1 to 2 cm long, densely packed and quite stiff.
Picea alcoquiana is single-sexed ( monoecious ). The male cones are 10 to 15 mm long and contain many stamens ; they are initially red and later turn yellow. The ovoid-cylindrical female cones are purple in color during the flowering period. The ripe cones are reddish to light brown, usually 7 to 9 (5 to 12) cm in length and usually 3 (2.5 to 5.5) cm in diameter when they have opened. The seeds, including their brown wings, are 7 to 10 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The Alcocks spruce is native to Japan on the island of Honshū . Since it only inhabits a small area, it is of no economic importance. In Central Europe is tree rarely planted.
Systematics and taxonomy
Picea alcoquiana was named Abies alcoquiana H.J. Veitch ex Lindl. First described in 1867. A synonym is Pinus alcoquiana (HJVeitch ex Lindl.) Parl.
There are three varieties:
- Picea alcoquiana (. Veitch ex Lindl) Carrière . Var alcoquiana ( Syn. : Abies alcoquiana Veitch ex Lindl. , Pinus alcoquiana (Veitch ex Lindl) Parl.. , Picea japonica rule , Abies bicolor Maxim. , Pinus bicolor (Maxim) Parl. . , Picea bicolor (Maxim.) Mayr ): It occurs in central Honshu.
- Picea alcoquiana var. Acicularis (Maxim. Ex Beissn.) Fitschen (Syn .: Picea acicularis Maxim. Ex Beissn. , Picea bicolor var. Acicularis (Maxim. Ex Beissn.) Shirasawa , Picea shirasawae Hayashi ): It only occurs in the Yatsugatake mountain range in front.
- Picea alcoquiana var. Reflexa (Shirasawa) Fitschen (Syn .: Picea bicolor var. Reflexa Shirasawa ): It occurs only in central Japan.
