John Gould Veitch (1839-1870)

John Gould Veitch (born April 1839 in Exeter , † 13 August 1870 in Combe Wood , Surrey ) was a British gardener, botanist and plant collector . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Veitch ".

He was great-grandson of the Scot John Veitch (1752-1839), who founded the tree school dynasty Veitch and Sons . The Veitch dynasty begins when John Veitch's son, James Veitch (1792–1863), the oldest of six children, joins the company after completing his training. The father of John Gould Veitch (1839-1870), namely James Veitch junior (1815-1869), handed over the London branch of the tree nursery, the James Veitch & Sons company , to his three sons John Gould, Harry James and Arthur . James Veitch junior died in 1869; just a year later, John Gould Veitch succumbed to tuberculosis .

From 1860 John Gould Veitch became one of the plant hunters for the James Veitch & Sons tree nursery . His collecting trips took him to Japan , China and the Philippines from 1860 to 1862 and to Australia from 1864 to 1866 . He married soon after his return to England; the marriage resulted in two sons, James Gould junior (1869-1914) and James Herbert .

Honors

According to James Veitch (1792–1863) the plant genera are Veitchia H. Wendl. and Neoveitchia Becc. named from the palm family (Arecaceae). The genus Veichtia Lindl is named after John Gould Veitch (1839–1870) . from the pine family (Pinaceae).

A five-part essay appeared in Garden History magazine on the history of the Veitch and Sons nursery . The first edition appeared in Volume 16 Vol. 1 (1988), the second in Volume 16 Vol. 2 (1988), the third in Volume 17 Vol. 2 (1989), the fourth in Volume 20 Vol. 1 (Springer 1992, Pp. 57-70).
