The Alcyone is the second research ship of the French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau . In the early 1980s he had the expedition ship, which is a combination of sailing ship and motor ship , planned and built. The Alcyone went on her maiden voyage in 1985 and is still on the road for the Cousteau Society today.
The Alcyone has a sail system consisting of two cylinders to support the diesel engine . Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Lucien Malavard and Bertrand Charrier developed this type of drive on December 23, 1986, the Cousteau franz. turbovoile or engl. called turbosail , patented it. The two cylinders deliver around 25-30% of the drive energy to support the screw drive. Although similar in appearance, the Turbosail should not be confused with the Flettner rotor , in which the cylinders are set in rotation by motors and generate propulsion via the Magnus effect.
Calypso II
Design of the Calypso II
Cousteau planned a larger ship with turbosail propulsion but died before the idea was implemented. The Calypso II should be 66 meters long and offer space for 36 people, including 15 crew members. She should also carry a helicopter , a submarine and a hydrofoil .
