The prepaid mobile phone tariff Aldi Talk , also known as MEDIONmobile (formerly ALDI TALK with MEDIONmobile ), is offered on the German market under the lead management of Aldi Nord and Süd . The operator is Medion AG; The contractual partner and service provider is E-Plus Service GmbH, which belongs to Telefónica Deutschland Holding . With over 5 million customers, Aldi Talk has been the most popular mobile phone discounter in Germany since 2005.

history

The distribution was initially tested under the name yesss at the Hofer subsidiary in Austria . After positive experience, the offer was launched under the Aldi Talk brand in the E-Plus network on December 7, 2005 in Germany . The “Highspeed for Everyone” campaign at E-Plus made it possible to surf the mobile network at the highest possible speed . In contrast to what was customary in the market at the time, the LTE network that was in existence in the meantime and which was mainly available in metropolitan areas could be used at no extra charge . From the takeover of the E-Plus Group by Telefónica, the O 2 network could also be used by means of national roaming . After the promotion ended in June 2016, the maximum surfing speed was reduced to the 21.6 Mbit / s specified in the tariff. The system was then converted to a prepaid platform from O 2 . Since the E-Plus LTE network was discontinued, Aldi-Talk customers have been able to access O 2's LTE network in many, but initially not in all regions . LTE access was officially advertised for the first time at the end of 2016.

For the brand's eleventh birthday in 2016, Aldi Talk launched its own online shop on its official website. In addition to the tariffs, this was expanded to include smartphones and tablets for sale.

Starter sets

The packages supplied by Aldi Talk are called Aldi Talk Starter Sets and are available in Aldi branches and online. These starter sets contain various forms such as the form with the telephone and SIM card number , a form for taking your phone number with you and for registering the starter set, which must be carried out directly by post or video identification as well as in the Aldi branches. The first form also contains the SIM card, which can now be broken out as mini, micro and nano SIM. The PIN and PUK codes are listed under this card. Brief instructions and a tariff overview are also included.

Charging

Customers can top up their credit with vouchers for amounts of 5, 15 and 30 euros, which are available in Aldi branches and are valid for six months. Top-ups are also possible online and with a SEPA direct debit mandate via automatic top-ups if the credit falls below a certain limit. In the past, it was also possible to top up with E-Plus cards.

Rates

In the beginning, standard telephony / SMS tariffs were offered at reduced rates. Since the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and netbooks, there have been flat rates for various types of use by customers.

The focus of the product range is on combination packages that contain allotments with free telephone minutes and Internet data volume. A distinction is made between the packages Package S (telephony / SMS flat rate and 3 GB data volume), Package M (telephony / SMS flat rate and 5 GB data volume) and Package L (telephony / SMS flat rate and 7 GB data volume) ( Status: December 2019).

All bookable tariffs have a term of 28 days. These are automatically extended, provided that sufficient credit is available. It is possible to adjust or cancel these tariffs at any time at the end of the term via the app, website or account hotline.

Since the introduction of Aldi Life Music powered by Napster , Aldi Talk has made it possible to book the usual flat rates with music options. One example is the Music Package M with a flat-rate phone / SMS, a data volume of 2 GB and access to Aldi Life Music for less than € 10 per four weeks.

criticism

  • According to a study by the news magazine Focus and the management consultancy Forum! Mainz in 2017, Aldi Talk again achieved first place as a provider with the most satisfied customers. In addition, the brand was named mobile communications brand of the year for the fifth time in a row by Handelsblatt and YouGov in 2018 .
  • At the end of August 2017 it became known that many recognized refugees were unable to activate purchased SIM cards. Refugee helpers from Lower Saxony passed this problem on to the consumer advice center. When asked by various media, Aldi Talk stated that the post and video identification procedure could not read it due to the small letters on the residence permit. Consumer protection recommends returning the purchased products.
  • In May 2019 which gave Landgericht Dusseldorf the consumer center Bundesverband with his lawsuit against E-Plus Service GmbH with AldiTalk law that the clause in order to refuse payment of prepaid credit without a SIM return to their Conditions is ineffective (Ref .: 12 O 264/18).
