Aleksander Ruzicka

Aleksander Maria Clemens Ruzicka (Czech: Ružička ; born December 13, 1960 in Alzey , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German manager and entrepreneur .

Professional activities

Ruzicka grew up in the south of France , studied business administration from 1980 to 1985 at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences in Mainz and obtained a degree in business administration.

He began his professional life in 1985 at the media agency HMS Hiemstra Media Service . In 1989, HMS was taken over by the French Carat Group , which was renamed Aegis Media Group in 1990 . After several positions within the group, Ruzicka became managing director of the local Carat Wiesbaden unit in 1995 . In 1998 he was promoted again within the company to Chief Operating Officer of HMS & Carat Germany / Central Europe . Ruzicka and his predecessor Kai Hiemstra have had a decisive influence on the European media industry since the 1970s.

After the surprising departure of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HMS & Carat Germany / Central Europe , Hans Germeraad, in August 1999, his deputy Ruzicka initially became an interim successor. Two weeks later, he became CEO of HMS & Carat Germany . Later, within the Aegis group, the responsibilities for Central and Eastern Europe as well as for the Baltic States, Greece and South Africa were added; Ruzicka also became chairman of the worldwide Carat board “Product Leadership Team”. From 2004 Ruzicka was also Deputy CEO for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). At that time he was a member of the "Landesbeirat Hessen" at Commerzbank .

After the company stagnated until 1998 and had to give up a large number of customers, Ruzicka managed to reverse this development and regain market leadership. In the period from 1999 to 2006, Ruzicka increased its earnings by almost 600% through acquisitions and organic growth. Ruzicka developed a variety of strategies; this earned him both recognition and resentment. He was considered the “enfant terrible” of the industry and one of the 99 most powerful people in Germany. After a management buyout was not completed, Ruzicka was replaced.

After serving a prison sentence for white-collar crime , Ruzicka initiated a media consulting company under the name Inzide GmbH in October 2015 . However, Ruzicka is neither owner nor managing director of the company, but registered as an authorized signatory . In 2017 and 2019, Ruzicka performed at so-called “Fuckup Nights”, in which managers and entrepreneurs reported on their failure in front of an audience. At these events, Ruzicka continued to plead his innocence, claiming that the Aegis agency had benefited from its costly client events, including hunting trips in Hungary and South Africa .

Ruzicka works with partners for the company Inzide and advises companies in the field of communication as well as in a number of other corporate matters.

Legal proceedings

In 2005, a lawyer from the Aegia Media Group and the then CFO of Aegis Media Central Services GmbH filed a criminal complaint that was declared anonymous. Ruzicka was arrested in October 2006 and subsequently placed in custody . The later criminal proceedings attracted media attention. After a 16-month criminal trial, Ruzicka was sentenced to 11 years and three months imprisonment in May 2009 for breach of trust in 68 cases. The court saw it as proven that more than 37 million euros were embezzled. The public prosecutor's office and the ruling assumed that free spots and discounts are attributable to the agency; in the meantime, legally binding rulings have been issued that these discounts are due to customers.

Alexander Ruzicka initially sued Aegis for a severance payment of 89 million euros and relied on documents whose authenticity was questioned by the court. In the following process, Ruzicka was acquitted in February 2015 of the allegation of attempted fraudulent proceedings, but withdrew his compensation claim. The appeal filed by the public prosecutor's office was withdrawn on the instructions of the public prosecutor because there was no prospect of success.

Ruzicka was sued for damages by Carat , but the suit was dismissed. The former European Minister Volker Hoff and his partner Reinhard Zoffel were also able to avert a claim for damages from Carat.

Various media published interviews with him while he was in prison. After serving eight and a half years in prison, Ruzicka was released early from prison in April 2015.

engagement

While working at Aegis, he and Claudia Jackson founded the Carat Children and Youth Welfare Association. Ruzicka is also committed to creating further transparency in the media and communication market. In South Africa, the Ruzicka Foundation is committed to protecting rhinos .

Private life

Aleksander Ruzicka has been living in a relationship with Thomas Ruzicka geb. Angry; The two have been married since 2004 and live in Germany and South Africa.
