Alengot oromaite

Proscovia Alengot Oromait (born January 1, 1993 in Katakwi ) is a Ugandan university student ( mass communication ) and politician . From 2011 to 2016 she was an elected member of parliament (MP) for the Usuk district in the Katakwi district . At the age of 19, she was the youngest MP in Uganda and on the African continent.

Life

Origin and education

She was born on January 1, 1993 in Katakwi District. Her father, Michael Oromait , was a member of the same seat of parliament before his death on July 21, 2012. In December 2011 she finished her high school (S6) at the St. Kalemba Senior Secondary School in the Kayunga district , and at the beginning of August 2012 she was accepted at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono .

Political career

After her father's death, Oromait decided to run as a candidate for the National Resistance Movement in the primaries to replace her father, who had served as an independent . She won the primaries and in the parliamentary elections in September 2012 she won with 54.2% of the vote. She was expected to bypass her undergraduate studies with her parliamentary duties for at least the next three years.

Personal Information

Oromait is unmarried and belongs to the National Resistance Movement, the ruling political party in Uganda. She deals with topics such as the environment , education , health policy and gender policy . One of her mentors is Jessica Alupo , the then education minister and member of parliament for the Katakwi district's women's representative.

Awards and honors

She was included in Forbes Magazine's list of 20 Most Powerful Women in 2013 .
