Alex Heller
Alex Heller (born July 9, 1925 in New York ; died January 31, 2008 ) was an American mathematician who studied homological algebra .
Life
In 1950 he received his doctorate from Columbia University under Samuel Eilenberg . In 1959 he became a full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . In 1965 he moved to the City University of New York . Together with Peter Freyd , he founded the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra in 1969 . The Heller operator is named after him. He gave an alternative approach to Grothendieck's derivatives. In 1955 he became a Sloan Research Fellow .
