Alexander Wilson (born October 29, 1933 in Buckie , † July 29, 2010 ) was a Scottish football player. The defender was part of the Scottish national team at the 1954 World Cup .

career

Raised in Scotland, Wilson joined the English club Portsmouth FC in 1949 . He then remained loyal to Pompey for 18 years and experienced successes and defeats with the club. Initially only a young supplementary player, he made his breakthrough in the First Division in the 1953/54 season . After only 25 league games for his club, he was appointed to the national team shortly before the 1954 World Cup finals for the last friendly against Finland . He then belonged to the 22-player World Cup squad that the Scottish Association had to report to FIFA . However, the association only took 13 players to Switzerland, so that Wilson stayed on the island. The international appearance before the tournament was his only international appearance.

In the 1954/55 season that followed the World Cup, Wilson reached third place with his club behind champions Chelsea FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers . The success was followed by the decline, in 1959 he ended the season on a relegation zone after only six wins this season with the club. Also in the Second Division it was against relegation. In the first year on the last non-relegation place he rose with the team in 1961 in the third division. There he was part of the team that made it back to the top. He then played until 1967 for Portsmouth FC, who thanked him and his teammate Johnny Gordon , who also ended his career that year, with farewell games against Arsenal FC and Stoke City for their services. At Chelmsford City he then ended his career in non-league football and won the championship of the Southern Football League with the team in 1968 , but at the time there was no promotion to the Football League .

After his career, Wilson worked for various printing companies. After suffering from Alzheimer's , he passed away in the summer of 2010.
