Sir Alexander William "Alex" Younger , GCMG , (born July 4, 1963 ) is a British intelligence officer and head of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

Life

Alex Younger was born on July 4, 1963. In his youth he attended Marlborough College and graduated from St Andrews with a degree in economics. During his time at the university he was promoted by the British Army . On September 5, 1986 he was accepted as a second lieutenant in the Royal Scots. On December 10 of the same year he moved to the Scots Guards . On April 5, 1989, he was promoted to captain. Younger ended his active military career on April 10, 1990.

Younger began working for the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) in 1991 . On behalf of this he was in Europe as well as in the Middle East , especially in Afghanistan . In 1993 he married Sarah Hopkins in Borgo a Mozzano , Tuscany .

From 2012 to 2014, he oversaw the MI6's global operations. In particular, he was responsible for security and counter-terrorism during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . Since November 2014, after the resignation of Robert John Sawers, he has been the head of the secret service.

Awards

On June 8, 2019, Younger was raised to the nobility with the Order of St. Michael and St. George and has since used the English courtesy sir as a name affix.
