Robert John Sawers

Sir Robert John Sawers , GCMG , (born July 26, 1955 in Warwick ) is a British diplomat. From November 2009 to November 1, 2014, he headed the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

Life

Robert John Sawers grew up with four siblings in Bath . He attended the Beechen Cliff School , where his hurdle record is said to be unbroken to this day. He studied physics and philosophy at the University of Nottingham , University of St Andrews , Witwatersrand University . His wife Shelley is a teacher. They have three grown children.

From 1993 to 1995, Sawers private secretary of Douglas Hurd and got one year International Fellow fellowship at Harvard University .

In 1996 he joined the Foreign Service of the British Embassy in Washington. There he led a team that dealt with foreign and defense issues until 1998.

From January 1999 to summer 2001 at the time of the Kosovo conflict he was Tony Blair's foreign policy advisor, and he was also involved in the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement in the Northern Ireland conflict .

From 2001 to 2003, Sawers was Her Majesty's Ambassador to Egypt (under Muhammad Husni Mubarak ), then he was the special representative of the British government in Iraq in support of the coalition interim administration after the fall of Saddam Hussein .

From August 2003 to 2007, Sawer was Political Director General in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office . Sawers dealt with UK politics in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans.

From August 2007 to November 2009 he was the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom Government to the United Nations.

Sawers led the UK team of the EU-3 negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.

He is one of 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .

From June 11th to 14th, 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs-Buchen , Austria .
