Harold Berner's Walker

Sir Harold "Hooky" Berners Walker , KCMG (born October 19, 1932 ) is a former British diplomat who was ambassador in Bahrain from 1979 to 1981 , ambassador to the United Arab Emirates between 1981 and 1986 , and from 1986 to 1990 ambassador in Ethiopia and most recently was ambassador to Iraq between 1990 and 1991 .

Life

Harold Berners Walker, whose father Sir Harold Thomas Walker Admiral of the Royal Navy , was made after visiting the renowned founded in 1382 Winchester College military service in the Royal Engineers and was last lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) . He then completed from 1952 to 1955 to study at Worcester College of the University of Oxford and entered after 1955 in the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) a. In the following years he found numerous uses at diplomatic missions abroad and in the Foreign Ministry. After completing a course in Arabic at the Middle East Center for Arab Studies (MECAS) in Beirut in 1957 , he was Assistant Political Agent in Dubai between 1958 and 1960 . After a post in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1960 and 1963, he taught himself as a senior instructor at the Middle East Center for Arab Studies from 1963 to 1964 , before he was first secretary at the Embassy in Egypt between 1964 and 1966 .

Walker then served as Chancellor and Consul at the Embassy in Syria from 1966 to 1967 and was then used again in the Foreign Ministry between 1967 and 1970. From 1970 to 1973 he was first secretary for trade affairs at the embassy in the USA and between 1973 and 1975 counselor and chancellor at the embassy in Saudi Arabia , which was then still in Jeddah . He then became Deputy Head of the Personnel Affairs Department in 1975 and was Head of this Department in the Foreign Ministry between 1976 and 1979. In 1979 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his services . As the successor to Edward Given , he became ambassador to Bahrain in 1979 and remained in this position until he was replaced by David Crawford in 1981. In 1981 he replaced David Roberts as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates . He remained in this post until 1986 and was then replaced by Michael Tait .

As the successor to Brian Barder , Harold Walker became ambassador to Ethiopia in 1986 and remained in this post until he was replaced by James Glaze in 1990. Most recently, in 1990, he replaced Terence Clark as ambassador to Iraq . He remained in this post until 1991 when the embassy was closed due to the Second Gulf War . In 1991 he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the addition of Sir . In 1992 he finally retired

Harold Berners Walker has been married to Jane Bittleston since 1960, daughter of sea captain CJL Bittleston.
