The Alexander von Humboldt School Wittmund (also known as KGS Wittmund ) is a cooperative comprehensive school in the Wittmund district and a partner school of the Hannover 96 sports club . It is currently attended by around 1700 students, making it one of the largest comprehensive schools in Lower Saxony. Around 160 teachers currently teach at the school. The school, founded in 1975, is named after the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt .

The Alexander von Humboldt School is a cooperative comprehensive school. In addition to a special needs school , it is the only school in the lower secondary level in the city of Wittmund. In the upper secondary level it is possible to acquire the Abitur. Two thirds of the students come from the core town of Wittmund, one third reach the school from the school's catchment area, which extends to the entire district of Wittmund . Years 5 to 10 have an average size of around 250 students. As a full-day school , the school offers an extensive afternoon program with many cooperation partners. The program includes offers such as the theater project “Curtain up!”, The circus project “Manege free!” And the “Gliding” project in cooperation with the flight group JG 71 Richthofen eV at the Wittmundhafen air force base .

Exchange programs with foreign schools have existed at the school for years. A German-French school exchange has been carried out since 1982. Since 2000, the school's foreign language department has organized regular student exchanges with students from the Italian capital, Rome . Since 2009 there has also been a student exchange program with the French high school Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca , Morocco , where the French film actor Jean Reno went to school.

history

The cooperative comprehensive school was founded in 1975 and is named after the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt . In 1981 the upper level of the gymnasium was introduced, so the students could stay at their school and did not need to switch to another school to enter the upper level. The neighboring schools were also relieved, as some upper school students switched to the KGS. In 1982 there was the first graduation class. The Alexander von Humboldt School has been an all-day school since August 2004 . In 2007, building II for the 5th and 6th grades was rebuilt to meet the requirements of running an all-day school.

The Alexander von Humboldt School is a founding member of the Committee Europe , an association of now 20 schools from nine European countries. The committee was founded on January 12, 1991 in The Hague , The Netherlands . The aim is the mutual cultural exchange, the breaking down of prejudices and the consolidation of the idea of ​​a European citizenship as well as the integration of disabled children in all common projects.

On July 5, 2013, there was a major fire in the school, in which large parts of the school building were destroyed. There was damage of around twelve million euros. Around 800 of the 1700 pupils had to be taught in containers from the beginning of the new school year 2013/2014 until the Easter break in 2014. After the holidays, they could go back to the completely renovated A-wing of the school. The school is to be completely rebuilt by mid-2017, making it one of the most modern schools in Lower Saxony.

Uwe Brauns has been the headmaster since 2005. He replaced Dorothea Vogt, who was the head of the school for only a short time (2004-2005). Vogt himself replaced Klaus Cornelius as headmaster in 2004.
