Alexander Andreyevich Archangelski ( Russian Александр Андреевич Архангельский ; born October 11 . Jul / 23. October  1846 greg. In Staro-Tesikowo , Penza province ; † 16th November 1924 in Prague ) was a Russian church musician , composer and choir director .

Life

Archangelsky studied at the Spiritual College in Krasnoslobodsk and then at the Spiritual Seminary in Penza , of which he led the Episcopal Choir . He then became a choirmaster in St. Petersburg . Since 1872 he had a position at the St. Petersburg court orchestra . He taught singing at the Imperial Alexandrovsky Lyceum . In 1880 he founded a mixed choir in St. Petersburg , which developed an extensive repertoire of folk song arrangements, classical choral music and works by contemporary composers. In church singing practice, he replaced the boy's voices with women's voices. In public he aroused interest in Russian songs and set many songs to music for choirs.

Archangelski created two novel liturgies, a night watch vigil and up to 50 smaller works, including eight cherubin chants , eight hymns Milost Mira (gift of peace) and 16 entrance hymns for the service.

Archangelski spent the last two years of his life in Prague . His grave is in the Tikhvin Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg. In 2002 the music college in Penza was named after Arkhangelski. In 2003 a memorial plaque for Arkhangelsky with a relief by the sculptor Alexander Khachaturian was installed at the Center for Russian Choral and Singing Culture in Penza .
