Alexander Benlian

Alexander Benlian (* 1976 in Munich ) is a German business IT specialist .

Life

Alexander Benlian studied Business Administration ( Diploma ) and Communication Science ( Master of Arts ) at the FernUniversität Hagen and Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU) from 1997 to 2002 . From 2002 to 2004 he studied technology management at the Center for Digital Technology & Management (CDTM) in Munich and completed his studies with an honorary degree. From 2002 to 2006 Benlian conducted research on information management topics at the University of Munich and was awarded a Dr. oec. publ. PhD . He then switched to the private sector and worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company in the Business Technology Office (BTO) from 2006 to 2008 . In 2008 he returned to science. He took up a position as an assistant professor at the University of Munich and completed his habilitation in 2012 .

In May 2012 he followed a call to the TU Darmstadt and has since held the Chair of Business Informatics: Information Systems & E-Services (ise). In 2015 he was offered a professorship for business informatics ( W3 professorship ) from the University of Cologne , which he refused. In 2017 he took on the role of Vice Dean for Science & Research at the Faculty of Business Administration at TU Darmstadt.

In addition to research and teaching, Alexander Benlian has been the spokesman for the research focus "Digital Transformation" at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 2016. In April 2017, he also took on the role of Vice Dean for Science & Research at the Faculty of Business Administration at TU Darmstadt.

Alexander Benlian is fascinated by paradigm shifts that arise and can be triggered by digital channels. In his research, he examines how companies can benefit from software platforms, cloud services and social buzz . He also looks at how users interact with novel IT-related concepts on the Internet. These include, for example, concepts such as web personalization, digital nudging or viral loop triggers. He is also interested in the areas of entrepreneurship , service research , behavioral economics and psychology .

His research results have been published in leading academic and practice-oriented journals such as the Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of the Association for Information Systems and MIS Quarterly Executive. Alexander Benlian works methodically empirically ; his publications include investigations in the field as well as in the laboratory.

In national and international research rankings, Benlian regularly ranks among the top 100 of the world's leading scientists in the field of business informatics (WI) / information systems (IS) .

His research projects were supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and other funding institutions (e.g. Jackstädt Foundation , State of Hesse).

In addition to his own research, Alexander Benlian works as a reviewer and co-editor for various scientific journals and publishers. Since 2011 he has been Associate Editor of the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS). In 2013 he was accepted as a member of the renowned Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Service Research (JSR). Also in 2013, he was appointed Associate Editor of the International Journal of Electronic Commerce (IJEC). Benlian is a reviewer for the German Research Foundation and for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). In addition, he performs regular review activities for numerous international and national IS / WI conferences (e.g. ICIS, ECIS, AMCIS, PACIS, WI, MKWI) and journals (e.g. MIS Quarterly , Information Systems Research , Journal of Service Research, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Information & Management, Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, Communications of the AIS, Electronic Markets , Wirtschaftsinformatik / Business & Information Systems Engineering etc .).

Alexander Benlian works regularly as an entrepreneurship trainer on behalf of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) . He regularly conducts workshops in developing countries (e.g. in Northern Iraq, Serbia) to support incentive and support programs for economic development and job creation.
