Alexander Bittner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Bittner (born March 6, 1850 in Friedland , Bohemia, † March 31, 1902 in Vienna ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist.

Live and act

Alexander Bittner, the son of a businessman, attended high schools in Jičín and Prague. His paternal great-uncle was the Prague astronomer Adam Bittner . After studying at the University of Vienna , he was Eduard Suess ' assistant from 1873 , where he also undertook geological research trips to Italy and Greece . In 1881 Bittner was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1897 the receiving geologist , who had been working since 1877, was head of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna. His merits lie in the work on alpine geology as well as in paleontology.

Bittner was also a very good draftsman, he made numerous detailed sketches of building damage to structures after the earthquake in northern Italy in 1873.

Bittner, who suffered from asthma, remained unmarried. He died of paralysis on March 31, 1902 . He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 27 B, row 2, grave 63). The grave, which fell into disrepair for a long time, was repaired by the City of Vienna in 1984 at the suggestion of Richard Lein .

His professional career has always been influenced by the dispute with Edmund von Mojsisovics , with whom he was on the road on numerous recordings, about the structure of the Alpine Triassic . A no longer published manuscript also suggests that it could also be a personal conflict and not just a matter of factual level.

Bittner was buried in an honorary grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 27 B).
