Adam Bittner

Adam Bittner (born October 19, 1777 in Dörnthal , Saazer Kreis, † September 3, 1844 in Leitmeritz ) was a Bohemian astronomer and mathematician .

life and work

After attending the Jesuit grammar school in Komotau , Bittner began studying philosophy and law at the Philosophical Faculty of Prague University in 1796 . In 1800 he began an internship at the Prague observatory in the Clementinum and later worked there as an adjunct. To finance his living, Bittner gave classes in practical mathematics at the Philosophical Faculty and the State Engineering School. In 1802, Bittner was appointed assistant professor for engineering at the Technical School and taught practical mathematics, geometry , algebra and arithmetic . In 1805 his dissertation took place . In the course of the reorganization of the technical school, Franz Josef von Gerstner appointed him professor of mathematics in 1806. He held this office until 1836. At the same time, Bittner also taught philosophy.

During this time, Bittner continued to work at the Prague observatory in close collaboration with its director Alois Martin David . After David's death, Bittner was appointed professor of astronomy and practical geometry at Prague University. In 1837, Bittner also succeeded David as the fifth director of the Prague observatory.

Bittner published his observations of star occultations, eclipses , comets and planets in the Berlin Astronomical Yearbook , the monthly correspondence and the Astronomical News .

Bittner was also the editor of a two-volume handbook of mathematics that appeared in 1814 and 1815. In 1825 he published a historical account of cometary astronomy, followed in 1833 by a volume of astronomical observations. In 1833 his treatise on differential calculus was published . Bittner also gave mathematical lectures.

His great-nephew was the geologist Alexander Bittner .

Appreciation

The minor planet 6596 , discovered on November 15, 1987 by the Kleť Observatory , was named Bittner in his honor .
