Alexander Franz Joseph Count von Engel (Engl zu Wagrain, born February 13, 1722 in Füssen , † February 22, 1800 ) was the only bishop of the Diocese of Leoben .

Life

Alexander Franz Joseph was the first-born son of Johann Weickard Adam Graf Engl zu Wagrain (1689–1755), Churpfälz Privy Councilor, and Maria Josepha Freiin von Hoheneck. Alexander received 1,743 in the diocese of Passau the priesthood , then was pastor of Enns and Passauischer vicar general . Even as a city pastor, he made a contribution to the training of clergy, which he financed from his own resources. He was appointed bishop of the short-lived Austrian diocese of Leoben on November 20, 1783. On April 30, 1786 the Archbishop of Salzburg , Hieronymus von Colloredo , donated him the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Virgilius Augustin Maria von Firmian , former Bishop of Lavant , and Franz Xaver von Breuner , former Bishop of Lavant and later Bishop of Chiemsee .

He ceded the inherited reign of Wagrain in a settlement to his youngest brother Joseph Weickard Christoph (1728-1800).
