Kasnachev was married to a born princess Volkonskaya, to whose literary evenings Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin appeared (out of courtesy) when he was living in Odessa. For the latter, Kasnachev was a kind of fatherly friend and protector who always tried to mediate between the poet and his superior.

Kasnatschejew also plays an important role in the biography of the marine painter Iwan Konstantinowitsch Aiwasowski (1817–1900). Kasnachev discovered the artist in Feodossia, took him to Simferopol when he became governor of the province of Tauria and, after graduating from high school, sent him to study at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Pushkin always expressed himself with great respect for Kasnachev, and he had a lifelong friendship with Aivazovsky. He died of old age in Moscow.
