Alexander John Motyl ( Ukrainian Олександр Мотиль ; born October 21, 1953 , in New York City ) is an American political scientist , historian , writer and painter of Ukrainian descent.

Motyl, whose parents were from Lviv , studied history and painting at Columbia University. From 1992 to 1998, Motyl was associate director of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University . He is currently (2019) Deputy Director of the Department of Global Affairs and Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University in Newark . His specialties are Ukraine, Russia , the former Soviet Union , nationalism , revolutions and empires .
