Alexander Viktorovich Podschio ( Russian Александр Викторович Поджио , Ukrainian Олександр Вікторович Поджіо Oleksandr Wiktorowytsch Podschio * April 16 jul. / 27. April  1798 greg. In Nikolaev , Russian Empire ; † June 6 jul. / 18th June  1873 greg. In Voronki , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Russian writer and Decembrist .

Life

Alexander Viktorovich Podschio was born the son of an Italian living in Russia, who was ennobled after participating in the battles of the Russo-Turkish War . His older brother Iossif Podschio ( Иосиф Викторович Поджио 1792-1848) later also became an officer and Decembrist. He went to school in Odessa and served in the Russian Army from 1814 , where he retired in March 1825 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Podschio became a member of the Northern Decembrist Society in 1821 and a member of the Southern Decembrist Society from 1823, establishing communication between these two societies. He was the closest collaborator of Pawel Pestel and advocated the establishment of a republic and the abolition of the imperial family. On instructions from Sergei Volkonsky , he led the Decembrist uprising in Tultschin in December 1825 . After the uprising was put down, he was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was reduced to 20 years of forced labor in Siberia. In exile he married Larissa Andrejewna Smirnowa ( Лариса Андреевна Смирнова ; 1823-1892) in 1851 . After an amnesty by Emperor Alexander II , he returned to European Russia in 1859. From 1863 on he lived abroad for several years, where he made friends with Alexander Herzen . He wrote his memoirs under the title Memoirs of a Decembrist (published Moscow 1930).

Podschio died in Voronki in 1873, where he had recently settled. He was buried there, next to the graves of Sergei Volkonsky and his wife Marija Nikolajewna Volkonskaja .
