Sergei Grigorievich Volkonsky ( Russian Сергей Григорьевич Волконский ., Scientific transliteration Sergei Grigor'evic Volkonskij , born December 8 . Jul / 19th December  1788 greg. In Ochakov , Russian Empire , † November 28 jul. / 10. December  1865 greg. in Voronki , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Russian prince and one of the most active Decembrists .

Life

He was a member of the Rurikid princes Volkonsky and son of Prince Grigory Semjonowitsch Volkonsky (1742-1824) and Princess Alexandra Nikolayevna Repnina (1756-1834).

In January 1825 he married Maria Nikolajewna Rajewskaja , was charged in December 1825 and sentenced in July 1826 in connection with the Decembrist trial to 20 years of forced labor and exile to Siberia . His wife voluntarily followed him into exile. The son Mikhail and daughter Jelena were also born in exile.

After Emperor Alexander II succeeded his father Nicholas I, who died in 1855, to the throne, the latter granted an amnesty , which enabled Volkonsky to return home. He settled with his family in Voronki in the Chernigov governorate, where the daughter Jelena married the owner of the village, MO Kotschubejem ( М. О. Кочубеєм ). Sergei Volkonsky died there on November 28th July. / December 10,  1865 greg. .

The memoirs of Prince Sergei Grigoryevich Volkonsky appeared in 1907 by Gutenberg-Verlag, Hamburg.

Tolstoy's fragment

On May 27, 1904, Lev Tolstoy remembers his meeting with Sergei Volkonsky in Florence at the turn of the year 1861  : “With his long gray hair, he looked like an Old Testament prophet to me ... He was an amazing old man with the flair of St. Petersburg aristocracy, the nobility and the court ... ”. In Tolstoy's fragment of the novel The Decembrists , the first three surviving chapters describe the arrival of Volkonsky in 1856 with his family from Siberia in Moscow . Of course, the author named the Decembrist in his writing from 1863 - with Russian censorship on his neck - Prince Peter Ivanovich Labasov
