Alexandre Jean-Baptiste Hesse (born December 30, 1806 in Paris ; † August 7, 1879 there ) was a French genre, portrait, history and church painter.

He was the son of the painter Henri-Joseph Hesse (1781–1849) and the nephew of Nicolas-Auguste Hesse (1795–1869), the winner of the Prix de Rome in 1818.

Hesse began his painting apprenticeship in 1820 in the studio of the landscape painter Jean-Victor Bertin . From 1821 he studied at the École des beaux-arts de Paris and from 1823 with Antoine-Jean Gros .

Alexandre Hesse made his debut at the Salon of 1833 with the history painting “Funeral of Titian”, who died in Venice during the plague of 1576. The painting earned him a first class gold medal.

This was followed by other large-format historical paintings: “The Conquest of Beirut ” (1842) and “ Gottfried von Bouillon promises allegiance to the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenus ” and “The body of Henry IV laid out in the Louvre”.

He was regarded as one of the great hopes of French painting alongside Paul Delaroche , Eugène Devéria or Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury .

He made several trips to Italy in the years 1833-1834 and from 1842 to 1847 . He became friends with the Swiss painter Louis Léopold Robert , who influenced his painting.

Thanks to the success of his first painting, he received several public commissions, in particular for the Museum of French History created by Louis-Philippe I in the Palace of Versailles , the Senate, the Banque de France and the Apollo Gallery of the Palais du Louvre .

He participated in the decoration of Parisian churches such as the Sainte-Geneviève chapel in Saint-Séverin (1850-1852), the Saint-François-de-Sales chapel in Saint-Sulpice (1854-1860) and in Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais (1863-1867). He also adorned the choir and a chapel of the church of Chevry-en-Sereine ( Seine-et-Marne ) in 1863 .

He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1867 .
