Alexei Ravelin

The Alexei Ravelin was the western outwork ( ravelin ) of the Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg in Russia . It served as a prison for people who the tsarist government found particularly dangerous. It was named in honor of Alexei Mikhailovich , the father of Peter the Great . From the second half of the 18th century it was used as a prison for political prisoners, including Decembrists , Petraschewzen , members of the liberal Cyril and Methodist brotherhood , participants in the Polish uprising of 1830/31 and supporters of the Narodnaya Volja association . In 1884 the prisoners were transferred to the Schluesselburg fortress .
