Alexei Ivanovich Sudajew ( Russian Алексей Иванович Судаев ; born August 23, 1912 in Alatyr , Russian Empire ; † August 17, 1946 in Moscow ) was a Russian weapons designer. He is the developer of the PPS-43 submachine gun .

Sudayev was born in the city ​​of Alatyr, which is part of the Chuvash Republic today . His father was a mechanic for the Telegraph . In 1929 Sudayev graduated from vocational school and initially worked as a locksmith . In 1932 he graduated from a technical college for traffic engineering and then worked as a technician in the Urals and from October 1934 in the railroad's armed forces.

In 1933–34, Sudayev patented his own techniques for automatic firearms for the first time, and further patent applications followed in 1935 while serving in the armed forces. 1936 Sudajew took a degree at the Industrial College in Gorki on. In 1938 he moved to the Moscow Dzerzhinsky Military Academy, where he dealt more closely with weapons technology; As a diploma thesis, he presented a self-developed machine gun with a caliber of 7.62 mm in 1941 .

In 1942, Sudayev developed the PPS-42, a new submachine gun, which compared to the previous models, the PPD-40 and PPSch-41 , had a number of advantages (including significantly less weight and labor intensity with the same performance). In the same year, the Soviet Army began arming with the new weapon . From autumn 1942 to June 1943 Sudayev had the model tested in the fighting for the besieged Leningrad . As a result, the PPS-43 was an improved version of the PPS-42, which went into series production in the same year. Several other modifications were made by Sudayev until 1945.

The PPS-43 became Sudayev's most famous invention and was also produced in large numbers in the post-war period in the Soviet Union as well as abroad (especially in the Warsaw Pact countries ) and used to equip armies. For their development, Sudayev received the Order of Lenin .

By 1945, Sudayev developed the first Soviet assault rifle in the 7.62 × 39 mm caliber , the AS-44 , but a prolonged illness prevented him from fully implementing his plans. He died in Moscow at the age of 33 and was buried in the Vagankovo ​​Cemetery .
