Alexei Maratowitsch Orlow (born October 9, 1961 in Elista ) is a Russian politician. He has been President of the Republic of Kalmykia since October 24, 2010 .
Alexei Orlov studied at the Moscow Institute of International Relations until 1984 . He then worked in various commercial companies until the mid-1990s. In July 1995 Orlov took up his first political office as representative of the Republic of Kalmykia to the President of the Russian Federation . He later also became the first deputy chairman of the Kalmyk government. On September 8, 2010, he was named together with three other candidates by the Presidium of the United Russia state party as a possible successor to Kalmyk President Kirsan Ilyumschinov . President Medvedev selected Orlov from the list of proposals on September 21.
