Alexei Alexejewitsch Woltschenkow ( Russian Алексей Алексеевич Волченков ; born February 5, 1953 in Novosibirsk , Russian SFSR ; † January 7, 2011 in Moscow , Russia ) was a Soviet ice hockey player who won numerous national and international titles during his active career between 1971 and 1983 won the CSKA Moscow Army Club . His son Anton is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Woltschenkow learned to play ice hockey in his native Novosibirsk , where he was active in the youth department of Sibir Novosibirsk from 1966 . Before the 1971/72 season , the then 18-year-old defender was recruited by the army club CSKA Moscow and from then on played for the ice hockey team from the state capital Moscow . First he was used in the junior team, but due to the injury of defender Vladimir Luttschenko , he received a chance in the senior squad of the club in September 1971, which he promptly used. By the end of his career in the summer of 1983, the defender celebrated numerous national and international successes, including ten Soviet championships , two runner-up championships, three cup wins and nine European Cup triumphs. In 321 games in the Wysschaja Liga Woltschenkow reached 36 goals. He was also active in the 1976 Super Series against the New York Rangers , Montréal Canadiens , Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League . His defensive partner was Sergei Gimajew for many years . For his services to CSKA Moscow he received the medal “For Service to the Fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR” .

In the 1977/78 and 1978/79 seasons Woltschenkow belonged to a Soviet all-star team supervised by Boris Majorov , which completed eight games in the 1977/78 season and six the following year in the North American World Hockey Association . The defender was used in all games and scored five points .

After the end of his career, Volchenkov completely turned his back on ice hockey and worked on the sports committee of the Ministry of Defense and the military. Volchenkov died on January 7, 2011 at the age of 57 in Moscow.

International

Woltschenkow represented the junior national team of the USSR at the U19 junior European championship in 1972 in Sweden . There the Soviet Union secured the silver medal behind the host. The defender was also named the tournament's best defender.

For the senior team of the USSR, the defender played only five friendlies between November and December 1973. He completed one of the games as part of the Izvestia Cup and was overall without a goal. He did not take part in the Winter Olympics or World Championships .
