Alexios Angelos Philanthropenos
Alexios Angelos Philanthropenos , Middle Greek Ἁλέξιος Ἂγγελος Φιλανθρωπηνός (* before 1373; † between December 1389 and March 1393) was lord of Thessaly from 1373 to about 1390 , from 1382 as a Byzantine vassal .
Life
Alexios came from the Byzantine noble family of Philanthropenoi , who had been at the top of the Byzantine military aristocracy since the middle of the 13th century. The wealthy magnate belonged to the retinue of the Nemanjid Tsar of Thessaly, Simeon Uroš Palaiologos , to whose wife Thomais Orsini he was related. His own wife Maria Radoslava was a granddaughter of Stefan Dušan .
When Tsar Simeon died in 1370/71, his son Jovan Uroš nominally assumed rule in Trikala . This was primarily dedicated to his religious interests and gave Alexios the control of state affairs. In 1373 Uroš abdicated in favor of Alexios and retired as a monk Joasaph in a Meteora monastery. In 1382 Alexios recognized the suzerainty of the Byzantine Empire. In return, he gave Manuel II. Palaiologos , who as co-emperor John V the prerogative Thessaloniki held, the Kaisar title. In 1384 he bequeathed the Kastron Kolydros near Larisa to the Nea Moni in Thessaloniki.
Alexios Angelos Philanthropenos is mentioned for the last time in 1389 when he provided the despot of Ioannina , Esau de 'Buondelmonti , with troops for the victorious fight against Albanian tribes in Epirus . In October of that year he was in Ioannina and had to go to the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I together with Buondelmonti in order to accept his sovereignty. After his death (around 1390) his son (or brother, nephew) Manuel became lord of Thessaly.
