Alexis Tioseco

Alexis Tioseco (born February 11, 1981 ; † September 1, 2009 in Quezon City ) was a Filipino - Canadian film critic and professor at the University of Asia and the Pacific . He was considered an advocate of Southeast Asian cinema and the most passionate fighter for Filipino film. He was named "One of the Most Important Young People in the Philippines Today" by the Philippine Star in 2005 for his efforts to promote Filipino cinema. He was the editor of the Southeast Asian film magazine Criticine .

Life

Tioseco was born in the Philippines but moved to Canada with his family in 1983. In 1996 he returned to the Philippines, where he completed his studies and worked in the family business.

Tioseco stated that the film Batang West Side of Lav Diaz have sparked his interest in Philippine cinema. He founded the website criticine.com, which the Filmmaker described as “the most influential and intelligent blog on Southeast Asian cinema”. Tioseco became known for introducing foreign viewers to Filipino cinema. He helped filmmakers in the failed attempt to reform the Metro Manila Film Festival .

In 2008 he published an article in Rogue , which was designed as a love letter to his partner Nika Bohinc. This was later described by the American screenwriter Gabe Klinger in The Auteurs as "the definitive manifesto for Filipino film [which] will soon become the canonical piece of critical writing". Tioseco has also published articles in The Philippine Star , Screen International and Senses of Cinema, as well as catalogs for the Torino and Pesaro film festivals. At the time of his death, he was a regular writer for the Philippine men's magazine UNO . He was part of the arts faculty at the University of Asia and the Pacific. Tioseco was part of the jury of several international film festivals.

On the night of September 1, 2009, at the age of 28, Tioseco was killed at his home in Quezon City by three armed burglars who fled after the crime. His partner Bohinc was also killed. The police checked the involvement of a recently hired housemaid who fled with the suspects.

Tioseco was buried in the family mausoleum in Angeles City .

On February 26, 2016, the woman suspected of the murder was arrested in Angeles. In May 2018, the then housemaid Criselda Dayag was sentenced to 40 years in prison for robbery with murder.
