Alf Khumalo

Alf Kumalo (* 5. September 1930 in Alexandra , Johannesburg , † 21 October 2012 in Soweto , Johannesburg, actually Alfred Khumalo and Alfred Kumalo ) was a South African photographer who with black and white photos from the era of apartheid became known . He was friends with Nelson Mandela and photographed his political career as well as the struggle of the African National Congress against the white minority government in South Africa. For this he was persecuted and arrested by the apartheid regime.

Khumalo was self-taught in the field of photography and received numerous awards. In the 1950s he worked for Drum magazine , which was produced for a black readership, for Bantu World and the Golden City Post . In South Africa he was also called "Bra Alf". In the last years of his life he passed on his knowledge at a photography school, in Soweto he got his own museum, the Alfred Khumalo Museum.

Awards

  • 2004 - South Africa's Order of Ikhamanga in Silver , awarded for "his contributions to documentary photography and journalism in South Africa" (his excellent contribution to documentary photography and journalism in South Africa.)
  • 2005 - Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity from the South African Editors' Forum for "his courageous journalism throughout his career".
