from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfonso IV of Aragon the Kind (* 1299 in Naples , † January 24, 1336 in Barcelona ) was king of Aragón and Sardinia from 1327 until his death .

He was the son and successor of Jacob II and his wife Blanka of Anjou-Naples. Already as crown prince Alfons conquered Sardinia in 1324 , which his father had been assured by Pope Boniface VIII after he had renounced Sicily . In order to secure the conquest, Alfonso waged war with Genoa as king , to this end he allied himself with King James III. from Mallorca . In 1314 he married Teresa d'Entença (1300-1327), countess and heiress of Urgell, daughter of Gombaldo, baron of Entença .

Alfons later became ailing and turned to religion. He came completely under the influence of his second wife Eleanor , daughter of Ferdinand IV of Castile . Because of donations to Eleanor, he got into a dispute with the estates, in which he was defeated. He got his nickname because of his lavish indulgence. He died of dropsy in 1336.

From his first marriage he had the following children:

  • Alfonso (1315-1317)
  • Konstanze (1318–1346) ⚭ 1336 King Jacob III. from Mallorca
  • Peter IV (1319–1387), King of Aragon
  • Jakob (1321–1347), Count of Urgell ⚭ 1336 Cäcilia de Comminges
  • Isabel (1323-1327)
  • Friedrich (* 1325), died young
  • Sancho (1326-1327)

Alfons had two sons from his second marriage:

  • Ferdinand (1329–1363), Marques de Tortosa ⚭ 1354 Maria of Portugal
  • Johann (1331–1358), Lord of Elche ⚭ 1354 Isabel Nuñez de Lara
